Lonely figure

A few weeks ago we had some mist / fog in my corner of Johannesburg. This is not a common occurrence. I was just about to turn in for the night but when I saw the conditions I just had to grab my camera and head on out to see if I could grab a shot or two. This my favourite shot from this session, but I’ll post a couple more over the next few days.

We were here to shoot a scene in a TV commercial for one of our clients. Kromdraai is located in the so-called “Cradle of Humankind” area of Gauteng, South Africa.

A wonderful place to spend a magical week-end. At Lake Glencairn, which is situated near Underburg, KwaZulu-Natal, about three kilometres along the Sani Pass Road.

Ghostly Trees

Looks cold and windy, but it’s neither. Yes, a bit misty but not cold. These trees are the victims of fire, which explains their bare appearance (in the middle of the South African summer when they should be in full leaf) and bent posture.

The Wood

Is the idiom “You can’t see the wood for the trees”, or “You can’t see the trees for the wood”? If I remember correctly I think it’s the former.

You can’t really get a “B” exposure setting on the Fuji Finepix S5600 I use, so I just adjusted the settings to get a 3-second exposure. Then I just kept firing away and hoped that some of the frames would get a strike sometime during each exposure. You can’t wait until the actual strike to shoot lightning – by the time you press the shutter it’s gone. The only way to do it is with longer exposure times.

Paid another visit to this derelict hotel and was surprised to find it in an even worse state of dereliction than before. According to the new owners of The Tickled Trout in Waterval Onder, someone stripped out everything that was usable and sold the stuff on auction.
