These days officially called “The Coca-Cola Stadium” (which I think doesn’t do justice to this venue’s rich history). The stadium hosted several 2010 World Cup games but it’s really as a rugby venue that it is known around the world. The current stadium, completed in the early 80’s, replaced the old Ellis Park stadium and I was lucky enough to attend the first event there – a world title boxing match between a South African named Charlie Weir (a.k.a. “The Silver Assassin” because of a shock of silver hair) and the then title holder, American Davy Moore. Moore won on a T.K.O. in the sixth round. This shot shows the buttressing beneath the grandstands.
