MOURNING MANDELA, HOUGHTON, JOHANNESBURG, 07.12.2013

Took a trip into Houghton today to photograph events at Nelson Mandela’s Johannesburg residence in the suburb. A strange atmosphere prevailed. Similar, in some respects, to the ’94 elections when everyone was hoping for a brighter future. Hopes sadly dashed by a crop of greedy, money-grubbing politicians who’ve strayed very far from the ideals supposedly espoused by Mandela following his release from prison in 1990.

Anyway, if you can’t make it to any of the venues where crowds have gathered to pay their last respects to “Madiba”, I hope these pictures help convey to you something of the atmosphere of the event.

Apart from the large police presence, there was  also a large media presence there as well.
